14 - Life Goes On

For almost a week, Grace could not bring herself to leave her bedroom. The pain was just too great. While almost everyone she knew was attending Beacon’s funeral, she and her mother attended her father’s. For the first time since the tragedy, Grace approached her mother.

“I’m sorry ...” Grace sobbed.

“Don’t do that, honey. Don’t blame yourself,” her mother responded. The response astounded Grace.

“I thought you didn’t approve of my ... activities,” Grace stated, awestruck.

“We didn’t, at first. We were just certain you would get hurt,” her mom explained. “But then we realized that if you didn’t stand up for the city, someone else would have to.”

A smile came to her mother’s face as she continued, “George was a stubborn man. He would never let you know this if he were still here, but he was proud of what you were doing out there.”

Knowing her father had been proud of her made her heart swell with joy. Grace gave her mother a big hug.

“Ouch!” her mother exclaimed. ”You have gotten stronger.”

It seemed as though half the city had come to pay their respects to their guardian angel. Women and children cried and men hung their heads in sorrow as a choir sang. A man stood at a microphone on a platform in front of the choir. When the song ended, the man began to speak.

“My name is Vincent Jameson, and I am the police commissioner of this great city. As many of you know, I was quite critical of allowing vigilantes to roam our streets. I still stand behind that belief.

So why, then, did I make an exception for Beacon?” he asked. “Because Beacon ... was not a vigilante in my eyes, she was a hero. She did so much more for this city than punch criminals’ lights out. She pulled people out of burning buildings, regularly put her life on the line for the police department, and even transported vital medical equipment during a devastating winter storm.

Despite my rhetoric against her, she wasted no time rescuing me and my family from a car that was sinking into the lake. She could have turned around, let the only obstacle to her work drown, and claim she was too slow to have prevented it. Or she could have said she was on her way to a much larger incident with more lives at stake. But she couldn’t do that. That’s just not who she was,” the commissioner said, as he fought back the tears.

“As I stand before you now to honor Beacon and her dedication to this city, I am announcing that I, Vincent Jameson, am running for mayor of Heartland. I pledge to you that despite the loss of our hero, I will see to it that the streets of this city are protected 24/7.”
